Out of the Frozen Deep — V

Man Proposes, God Disposes — Sir Edwin Landseer (1864) © Royal Holloway University of London — a painting which draws on the scene of discovery of human remains in a boat on King William Island described by McClintock in The Voyage of the Fox in Arctic Seas, the published account of his 1859 expedition in search of Franklin. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Jane Franklin refused to view the painting when it was first exhibited at the Royal Academy
